Dancing with devils

After an extensive Battle of the Bands, the Coastal Collective was selected to headline at UHS' most recent music/dance event, Dance With the Devils. The performance was last Saturday at the famed Great American Music Hall here in San Francisco. The band played a solid four-song set, which included a rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" featuring guest performers Julia Mattison on vocals and Patrick Galvin on violin. Despite a few last-minute scrambles, the band sounded great. Everyone was surprised to see so many students dancing to the funky jazz tunes. With the excellent acoustics, super assistance at the venue and a solid turnout, the Dance With the Devils was a hit. We even inspired fellow UHS band Easy, Action to seek out a manager.

Jazz for the holidays

The band made a brief but thrilling appearance at University High School's fall jazz concert last Friday night. The set included classic "Summertime" and Herbie Hancock's funky tune, "Chameleon," and a loud cheer ensued after drummer Mack Howell's compelling solo. The latter was particularly well-received by the crowd, which included the school's visiting Swiss exchange students. Despite the premiere of the latest Harry Potter movie, friends, family and jazz fans alike came out to enjoy the fine talents of the UHS music program.

The band would also like to note that they are available for upcoming holiday parties. The small jazz ensemble is well-suited for both private parties and public events. The holiday season can get quite busy, though, so contact coastalcollective@gmail.com as soon as possible to secure a booking.

Pardon our dust...

After two successful gigs through the San Francisco private school network, the Coastal Collective is keeping busy with bi-weekly rehearsals and designs for a new business card. Unfortunately, neither the band nor their manager is too skilled in creating a fancy blog with sidebars, pictures, and such, and our local technology consultant is unavailable for the time being. We are working on spicing up the blog, and we hope to have it updated within the next month. Until then, please keep checking in, and we will post information on public gigs as soon as it becomes available.

A great, big hello to our friends, family, supporters and admirers. We are San Francisco University High School's small jazz ensemble, the Coastal Collective. As young musicians, we traverse the city, spreading soulful jazz wherever we go. We will be using this blog to keep our lovely fan base updated on our latest gigs, performances and new developments in the band. It will also be a journal for significant events among our band members and any affiliates we may acquire. Thanks for reading, and enjoy our blog!
